Getting admissions to the Medical colleges is an arduous task and completing the medical course is yet another cumbersome task. However, the craze for admissions to Medical colleges continues to rise among students.
A medical school is a tertiary educational institution or part of a larger education institute that teaches medicine. Some medical colleges offer varied programs enabling students to opt for Master's Degree and Doctor of Philosophy and other post secondary education. Medical colleges can also employ medical researchers and operate hospitals. Medical colleges teach subjects, such as human anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology, neurology, obstetrics, gynecology, anesthesiology, internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, psychiatry, genetics and pathology.
The entrance criteria, structure, teaching methodology and the nature of medical programs offered at medical colleges vary considerably around the world. Medical colleges are extremely competitive and use standardized entrance examinations through out the world to suit the stringent selection criteria for candidates. Some of the global medical entrance exams are GAMSAT, MCAT, UMAT, NMAT, BMAT, UKCAT and many others. Medical colleges are regulated by each country and are listed on the WHO Directory of Medical colleges or the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory.
In India, the study of medicine is completed as an undergraduate degree and authorizes to work without any prerequisite undergraduate coursework. However, an increasing number of places are emerging for graduate entrants moving medical education closer to the US/Canadian model. In this model, there is a requirement of several years of university level study. Students wanting to enter medical school often complete a bachelors degree with a (pre-medical or medical science) curriculum including physics, chemistry, genetics, biochemistry, pathology, anatomy and physiology and human biology.
