School And ADHD Are An Imperfect Match

School and ADHD are about as different as night and day and the numbers support this assertion. It is estimated that a nearly unbelievable eight out of ten students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder underachieve academically. What makes this number even more frightening is that the ADHD personality seems to struggle the most with the basic building blocks of reading, writing, and math, carrying this lack of basics forward into adulthood.??

Really when one looks at school and ADHD objectively it is not surprising that things don’t work out so well, the only surprising part is the magnitude of the problem. To better understand this let’s briefly take a look at the three primary ADHD symptoms of inattention/distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity/restlessness.??

Inattention/distractibility: Children with ADHD have trouble focusing. They may be able to focus very well at times and other times be lost in the fog. The variable nature of being able to focus at times but not others can lead to educators wrongly interpreting the situation, concluding that the student simply isn’t trying hard enough or not implementing effective study habits.??
